I was inspired through film photography to create a double exposure of my adoptive mother and birth mother.
This straitjacket was created from handmade fabric by repurposing my used alcohol swabs which show the remnants of bloody finger pricks, dead skin cells, and medical tape residue. Held together with dabs of latex, this material demonstrates the helping hand of the healthcare system and the ”patching holes” approach regarding the treatment of diabetes.
The garment represents the mindset of the 8.7 million people around the world living with Type 1 diabetes. Some diabetics believe their autoimmune disease controls their life because of the daily hardships and complications. Others are able to break free from the mentality of expecting the worst and turn it into being ultra prepared, allowing a diabetic to live more freely. As dainty as the fabric and design may be, it is a straitjacket and a physical constraint when worn.
In the time of Corona, hoarders have bought up all the toilet paper and have reduced me to using my recycled diabetic materials in its place. My daily use of alcohol swabs has afforded me the luxury of being able to wipe myself.
My DIY TP consists of 100% recycled, former two-ply cotton, and is perforated for convenience. Held together with liquid latex, this TP is suitable for most people's private parts. Contact me if you need some in your household. If an allergic reaction occurs, call your medical professional but do not leave your home.
Installation consisting of 77 Romanian adoption stories from the early 1990s written from the perspective of the adoptive parents. The adoptees have been contacted by mail to update their life stories 25 years later, from the perspective of the adult adoptee. These stories have been meticulously constructed into family trees.
